Children Entering Kindergarten – 7th Grades

Books must be checked out from the Long Beach Library.

There will lots of fun things for you to do during this year’s Summer Reading Program, but remember that our programs are planned for children entering kindergarten – 7th grades only. We have preschool story time programs for your younger brothers and sisters on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 10:30 am, and schedules for their programs can be found at the library or by clicking the Preschool Story Time link. And now for the most popular questions…

HOW MUCH DO I HAVE TO READ TO EARN TRINKETS AND CERTIFICATES? A simple question deserves a simple answer.  This year you are only competing with yourself.  Everyone who meets their personal reading goal for the summer will earn a certificate.  EVERYONE.  So build a better world this summer by building a better reader out of yourself!

WHEN CAN I START READING? You may start reading books toward your summer reading goal on May 30th.

WHERE DO I GO FOR THE PROGRAMS? Programs will be held at the Long Beach Library at 209 Jeff Davis Avenue (unless the schedule says otherwise), and programs usually last 45 minutes to an hour.

WHAT’S A READING RECORD? On May 30th, you will be given a reading record at the first program. Your reading record will be used to record the books you read over the summer.

WHEN CAN I PICK OUT TRINKETS, AND WHAT ARE TRINKETS? Trinkets are given out as an incentive at the end of the programs, but you must have your reading record with you to get your trinkets. By the way, trinkets are just little “doodads” that you get for meeting your reading goals, like erasers, tattoos, rings, stickers, etc.

DON’T FORGET! Reading records are due by 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 8th. This is the last day to get trinkets, too. The Party for all grades will be held on Thursday, July 13th at 2:00 pm.
